It’s a brand new year, and like every new year, many of us take some time to reflect and set intentions and resolutions for the new year. 2022 is a fresh start, and why not start strong by setting a New Year’s resolution (or two) for your career?
At Intuit, we’re committed to supporting our employees in their career growth and development. Our team created a guide for our managers and employees, sharing helpful tips that can be applied to anyone who may be interested in fueling their career growth in 2022.
Talk with your manager on your focus areas and career aspirations. Have regular check-in conversations and share what you’re proud of, and ask for feedback both on areas for development. Have an open conversation about where you want to take your career in the next several years. Your manager is there to support your growth!
Hone your skills. For every role, there are unique and valuable skills that drive business outcomes, customer experiences, and career growth. Whether it’s learning a new platform, getting better at writing or even learning to code in a new language, share your goals with your manager and make sure to keep track of your progress.
Not only will you have the opportunity to learn a skill that may help you in your current role but you can add to your resume as you continue to grow your career.
Set aside time to learn each month. Make a resolution to learn something new for your career every month and set up a bi-weekly or monthly calendar block to dedicate time to your learning–it works! Think about where you want to be a year from now or even in five years. Use that as a starting point to determine possible topics you may be interested in. From there you can explore options that can help you learn and grow.
There are plenty of resources available from free webinars, to conferences and online training and more. If you’re looking for even more motivation, try finding a colleague or friend to be an accountability partner and you can learn together.
Outline your dream role. Think about your strengths and what brings you joy in your current role or any of your past roles. Create a list of skills and responsibilities that you’d like in your ideal role. While you may not find a job that has every one of your requirements, having a list will help you determine if a role may be a great fit.
Or if you’ve outlined skills that you don’t yet have, use your list as a guide for your personal development in the next year. Be sure to share with your manager and ask for support and you can even explore stretch opportunities to help you continue to grow and develop.
Update your resume. The best time to update your resume is when you’re not in a rush. Make it a goal to document new experience, skills or accomplishments each year. That way, they’ll be ready at your fingertips when you’re ready to think about the next step in your career.
You may even want to think about posting your resume on popular career websites. Talent recruiters are always looking for top talent and your next job could even come to you!
Explore other jobs both inside and outside your company. Ever wonder what a typical day looks like in other roles? Reach out people in different roles or schedule a virtual coffee chat to learn more about their jobs.
Pull together a list of your top questions and you may discover that you’re interested in a space that you had never imagined. Everyone’s professional journey is different. Many people love to share about their career and work with others–ask away!
Apply for that new role you’ve been interested in! Hit submit on the application you’ve been thinking about. Even if you don’t get the role, you’ll be setting yourself up for success by exploring options and preparing for the next step in your career. You may even get feedback from either the recruiter or hiring manager that can help you strengthen your skills as you explore a future job opportunity.

Career paths look different for everyone and there’s no right or wrong journey. Take time to reflect on what you want as well as your hopes and dreams for the future. By prioritizing yourself and your career, you can set yourself up for success and the sky’s the limit to what you can achieve.
